We had large gains among elementary school teachers (from 10.7% to 16.4%) and middle school teachers (from 11.8% to 20%). Our largest showing was among high school teachers, 36%, up from 28% in 2004. Unity, Randi Weingarten's caucus, lost ground in every category of active members. It got a smaller percent of the vote, and a lower number of people voting for it, in each of the categories of active members. Unfortunately, the proportion of UFT members who voted went down dramatically. In 2004, 29% of active members voted. This year, it went down to 22%. There are many possible reasons for this, including a terrible snafu with the envelopes for returning the ballots, many of which got returned to the UFT member who sent it. The UFT leadership refused TJC's request to extend the deadline for receiving ballots to compensate for this delay.
